The idea behind the objectives of the Organization dates back from November 2009 when the founder was a third year Law student pursuing a degree at Chancellor College a constituent college of the University of Malawi. From his educational background, he has constantly been assisted by people. He therefore felt a need to give back to the society particularly to his maternal home district of Balaka...

LIST AND DESCRIPTION OF CAREERS IN MALAWI AND ABROAD

The following list and description of careers existing in Malawi and abroad will give you some ideas about what you can do in future life after the completion of your studies. It is also meant to help students and the general public in preparing for the career they want to become by marrying their interests, abilities, skills and qualification with those required in specific careers. The list might not be exhaustive, but it contains almost many of existing careers currently known.

ACCOUNTING & FINANCIAL OPERATION CAREERS

Accountant

Accountant professionals must understand tax codes and have knowledge of what it takes to keep a business profitable or assets solvent. Mathematical and critical thinking, active learning, system analysis and financial management are some of the required skill for an Accountant. Problem sensitivity, information ordering are among some abilities required of an Accountant.

Actuaries

An Actuary is a business professional who deals with the financial impact of risk and uncertainty. They provide assessments of financial security system, with a focus on their complexity, their mathematics and their mechanics. Analytical and valuation skills, business and human behavioural knowledge are the major requirements to become one. Financial qualification combined with the above skills will turn you into an Actuary.

Auditors

These are those that systematically and independently examine data, statements, records operations and performances (financial or otherwise) of an enterprise for a specific purpose. In auditing, he perceives and recognizes the propositions before him for examination, collects evidence, evaluates the same and on this basis formulates his judgment which is communicated through his audit report. General accounting and analytical skills are needed here.

Brokerage Clerks

These work for firms that buy and sell securities; they are responsible for writing orders, verifying transactions and keeping records of activities involving stocks, bonds and other type of investments. Accounting skills and qualification are essential here.

Budget Analyst

They help public and private institutions organize their finances. They prepare budget reports and monitor institution spending.

Budget Manager

Like an Accountant, Financial Analyst, or cost estimator, a budget manager works in the field of finance, developing an organizational budget and monitor its implementation.

Cashiers

Responsible for guest service and generating sales. Accounting qualities and qualification are required.

Claims Adjusters, Appraisers, Examiners and Investigators

They investigate insurance claims by interviewing the claimant and witnesses, consulting police and hospital records, and inspecting property damage to determine the extent of a company's liability.

Debt Counsellors

These are professionals that help people improve their financial life in spending, saving, budgeting etc. They need to know legal issues about mortgage and consumer protection laws.

Economists

They research and report on how countries and markets utilize human and natural resources to produce products and services. It is a profession in the social science discipline.

Financial Analysts

They provide guidance to business and individuals making investment decision. They assess the performance of stock, bonds and other type of investment. They work in banks, pension funds, bonds etc. They are also called security analyst or investment analysts.

Financial Clerks

They keep records, help customers and carry out financial transactions. They need to have financial and mathematical knowledge. Good communication skills are also essential. These work in banks, financial firms and government departments.

Financial Manager

These ensure financial health of an organization. They produce financial reports, direct investment activities and develop strategies and long term plans for the financial goal of an organization. They usually work full time in institutions like banks or insurance companies. Bachelor's degree is usually a minimum qualification plus some experience in similar job.

Financial Services Sales Agent

They buy and sale loans, securities or commodities in investment and trading firms for customers. Not common in Malawi.

Insurance Agents

They help insurance companies generate new business by contacting potential customers and selling the types of insurance held by the main Insurance company from whom he acts as an agent. Insurance or business qualification is required to become one coupled with good communication and interpersonal skills.

Insurance Appraisers

These assist in insurance claims situations when damage has occurred. They work with professionals in the insurance industry and with individuals filling the claim. Investigative skills are needed here.

Insurance Billing Specialists

These are medical office assistants who process insurance claims for health care institutions, including hospitals, private practices and other care facilities. They must be proficient in medical terminologies and health systems.

Insurance Underwriters

Insurance underwriters decide whether to provide insurance and under what terms. They evaluate insurance applications and determine coverage amounts and premiums. Insurance work-related experience and computer skills plus a Bachelor's degree are some of the requirements. These are usually employed on full time.

Loan Officers

They are also called "Mortgage Loan Originators". They recommend loan applications from different individuals and institutions. They usually specialize in commercial, consumer and mortgage loan. They work for banks and other financial institutions. They are also viewed as intermediaries between lending institutions and borrowers. They solicit loans, represent creditors to borrowers and vice-versa. Bachelor's degree in Finance or Economics suffices on this position.

Personal Financial Advisor

These give financial advice to people. They help with investment, taxes and insurance decisions. Usually work in financial and insurance industry or become self-employed. They are full time workers and have tight schedules. Bachelor's degree is a minimum qualification.

Tax Examiners, Collectors and Revenue Agents

These determine liability or collect taxes from individuals or business firms according to prescribed laws and regulations.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT CAREERS

Account Collectors

They are also known as "Bill Collectors." They try to recover on overdue bills. They negotiate with debtors and help them find solutions. They usually work for a third party firm other than the creditor. Negotiating and good communication skills are needed here.

Accounting Clerk

They produce financial records for the organization. They record financial transactions, update financial statements, and check financial records for accuracy. They must have basic maths and computer skills, including knowledge on spread sheets and book keeping software. Diploma on accounting qualification is a requirement despite that many does learn the job while they are still at employment.

Administrative Assistants

They are also referred to as Secretaries. They organize files, draft messages, schedule appointments and support other staff in times of need. Graduates with basic office and computer skills qualify for this job. Good communication and inter-personal skills are also essential here.

Administrative Service Manager

They plan, direct and coordinate supportive services of an organization. Their specific responsibilities vary by the type of organization and may include but not limited to keeping records, distributing mails and planning and maintaining office facilities. These usually spend most of their time in office. Diploma in administrative qualification plus having analytical, communication, and leadership skills and detail oriented are some of the requirements.

Auditing Clerks

They are like accounting clerks, responsible for examining and verifying financial records and transactions for accuracy and compliance with regulations.

Cargo Agent

This is a person who is responsible for all the logistical aspects of transporting materials, or parcel, including scheduling, parking, routing, documentation, tracking, customs clearance, compliance, customer communications and negotiating on behalf of clients best terms and pricing.

Communications Equipment Operator

They work in military transmitting, receiving and encoding messages at military locations. Good English and speech are required. Ability to remain calm in an emergency, interest in working with codes, and interest in working with communication equipment are the major required attributes.

Computer Operators

These monitor and control electronic computer and peripheral electronic data processing equipment to process business, scientific, engineering and other data according to operating instructions. They monitor and respond to operating and error messages. Computer knowledge, analytical and communication skills are vital for this position.

Counter and Rental Clerk

These are people who informatively answer customers' questions on costs, availability of product or service they provide or rent. They may also receive payment for the same. The job require very little or sometimes no experience at all. However, good communication and inter-personal skills are vital.

Courier

This is a person who delivers messages, packages and mails. Require less qualification with many requiring driving license.

Customer Service Representatives

They handle customer complaints, process orders and provide information about an organization product and services. They usually work in banks, insurance agents, telephone call centres, and retail shops. School certificate or diploma is a desirable qualification plus good communication and basic computer skills.

Data Entry Clerk

He is sometimes called a "Typist." He enters data from documents into computer system. Typing skills with proficiency and speed and accuracy are required. No technical knowledge is required in this career.

Data Processing Clerk

This enter data into an office machine or computer system. Computer literacy skills are needed.

Dispatchers

These are communication personnel responsible for receiving and transmitting pure and reliable messages, tracking vehicles and equipment, and recording other important information. Can work in police, fire departments, railroads and other emergency medical institutions. They are like the conductor of the departments.

File Clerks

These keep files and documents organized for company. They work with both paper documents and electronic files. They also locate and remove information from files when requested. Again, they do routine work of copying, scanning documents at office. These also enter data hence need for general computer knowledge.

Financial Officers

These are corporate officers primarily responsible for managing financial risks of a company. They are also responsible for financial planning and record keeping as well as reporting to higher authority. Financial qualifications with related qualities are essential.

Freight Agents

They expedite and route movement of incoming cargo and freight shipments in airlines, train, trucking terminals and shipping docks. They take orders from customers and arrange pick up of freight and cargo for delivery to loading platform. They also prepare and examine bill of lading to determine shipping charges and tariffs. One need to good spoken and written communication skills, good maths skills, ability to work accurately and pay attention to details, computer literacy, organizational and planning skills, tack and diplomacy, foreign language knowledge and interest in geography among others.

Interviewers

They conduct interviews for those willing to secure a job. Good communication and listening skills are essential to this career.

Librarians

He is a person who works professionally in the library. He may even hold a degree in librarianship. They conduct research and find information for different use by different professionals. Information curation, in-depth and high-value research skills, corroborative, coaching and facilitation skills are essential.

Messengers

They carry messages from one place to another. No formal education is needed here. Good speaking skill, active listening, time management, service oriented, coordinating abilities, critical thinking and ability to read are some of the many skills required by messengers.

Meter Readers

They work for companies that provide for different utilities and their work involves travelling to different residential sites recording consumption of such utilities which include but not limited to electricity, water etc. Customer service qualities are required of a Meter reader such as interpersonal skills.

Procurement Clerk

They prepare purchase orders and send copies to suppliers of goods and to departments originating requests. Academical qualification of purchase and supply is required. Oral and written comprehension, deductive reasoning and information ordering are some of the required skills.

Production and Distribution Officer

They plan and manage production and distribution of goods and services at a company. It's a senior position and requires at least a degree. Leadership and analytical skills are required.

Receptionist

This is an employee who takes a supportive role at an office. It involves working at a front desk. Friendly and confident personality, smart appearance, good communication skills, ability to be firm but polite, good organizational skills are some of the requirements.

Record Clerk

He accurately organizes files, retrieving information regarding the company. He ensures that record is kept up-to date and that any additions or changes are made in a timely manner. A diploma or a general degree would be required for this job.

Secretaries

A secretary, personal assistant or administrative assistant is a person, whose work consists of supporting management, including executives using a variety of project management, communication and organizational skills.

Timekeeping Clerks

Does a similar job like that of a Payroll clerk where they compute time worked by an employee. Accounting and financial knowledge and skills are required. Computer literacy is also required with the fast developing information technology.

Travel Clerk

They make and confirm transportation or lodging. They sell tickets, may check baggage and direct passengers to designated courses. They also provide tourists with travel information. They need to actively look for ways to help people, use mathematics to solve problems, have knowledge of geography, good communication skills, time management skills and be able to adjust actions in reaction to others action are among the desired qualities.

AGRICULTURAL CAREERS

Agricultural Managers

They do managerial work at a farm estate, farm consultancy films etc. They also work in agricultural colleges, identifying pests and diseases of livestock. Need to have degree qualification in agriculture, business, crop or animal science etc. However, many employers require experience and skills as equally important to academic qualification. Initiative, good communication skills, analytical, IT skills, technical knowledge of the environment and marketing and sales skills are some of the requirements.

Agricultural Worker

This is someone who works on a farm, maintaining crops such as fruits, vegetables etc. Others maintain livestock. They usually work on supervision of the Agricultural manager where they receive on-the-job training. They usually work out doors irrespective of the weather.

Animal Husbandry Workers

They supervise and co-ordinate activities of animal husbandry on a farm. Formal education is not a major requirement. Hands on experience in a similar job may suffice.

Conservation Workers

They measure and improve the quality of forests. This role involves working to protect and preserve natural resources and forest ecosystems.

Farm Managers

These work in either animal or crop production. Their job includes planning strategies for maximum yield, organizing farm administration, working machinery, organizing associated businesses and managing staff. Farm Managers need to have technical and practical competencies as well as abilities to make sound decisions. A formal tertiary qualification in Agricultural field is required coupled with experience.

Farmers

He is a person engaged in agriculture, raising living organisms for food or raw materials. He is also known as Agriculturer. He needs to be money wise, innovative, resourceful, manage people and time, play to his or her strength and pay attention to details. No formal academic qualification is needed.

Fisherman

He is a person who captures fish and other animals from water. Curiosity, consistency, persistence and good note-taking skills are needed.

Forest Worker

He is also known as a Forest Craftsperson. He carries out practical tasks in forests and woodlands to help care and protect the environment. He plants, prune and fell trees. He also protects trees from pests and diseases. To be a forest worker, you need to be responsible and safety conscious. You will also need to be physically fit and good at solving problems. If you love being outdoors and interested in looking after the environment, this is good job for you.

Logging Workers

He is someone who cuts down, processes and transport mature trees for logging purposes. It requires people who are physically fit and willing to work outdoors sometimes in poor weather and isolated areas. The work usually involves lifting, climbing and other strenuous activities. Workers use hearing protection whilst logging.

Ranching and Ranch Workers

Ranching is the practice of raising herds of animals on large tracts of land. Qualities of a Farmer also apply here. Workers in this field are responsible for the care and management of livestock, maintaining fences and facilities, and ensuring the health and well-being of the animals.

CONSTRUCTION CAREERS

Block Masons, Brick Masons and Cement Masons

They are simply known as masons. They use bricks, concrete blocks and natural and man-made stones to build fences, walls, and other structures. The work is physically demanding and work outdoors in poor weather conditions at times. Most work is full time. The job can be learned at technical schools for instance at TEVETA college in Malawi. Cement masons pour concrete and maintain the floor of buildings with cement or terrazzo.

Boilermakers

He is a trained craftsman who produces steel fabrications from plates and sections. They use gas torch sets to cut or gauge steel plates and tubes and some gas to attach and mend the cut sections of tubes and steel plates. Attending a trade or technical school, combined with employer-provided training accelerate the learning curve of this job.

Carpenters

It is a skilled trade in which the primary work performed is the cutting, shaping and installation of building materials during construction. Apart from learning it at technical school, work training is also important through apprenticeship.

Carpet, Floor and Tiles Fitters

They lay floor coverings in homes, offices, hospitals, stores and many other types of buildings. Before installing, they determine the surface, measure the area and plan the layout for better appearance. They use hand tools like hammers during the work. They usually work indoors and during regular daytime. Workers usually experience cuts from the tools they work with. A formal high school qualification is not a major requirement. Training by an employer or constructor would suffice.

Construction and Building Inspectors

They ensure that construction meet local and international regulations. Spend most of the time inspecting work either alone or as part of the group. They may have to climb ladders or crawl in tight spaces and most work full time during working hours. Most employers require someone with a diploma and considerable experience in construction work.

Construction Equipment Operator

He drives, maneuvers or controls the heavy machines used for construction. They usually get dirty during the work. They work full time and even in odd hours. Many learn the job at sites without having any formal academic qualification.

Construction Manager

He is responsible for the overall planning, coordination and control of a project from beginning to completion. He aims at meeting client's requirement in order to produce a functionally and financially viable project. He collaborates with engineers and architects. A formal qualification such as Civil engineering degree is needed.

Construction Site Laborers

These are unskilled people who do helping work at a construction site. No academic qualification is needed.

Drywall, Ceiling and Tapers Installers

Drywall and Ceiling Installers hang wallboards to walls, ceiling and install ceiling inside the building. Tapers prepare wallboards for painting, using tape and other materials. Many workers do both installing and taping. They spend most of the time standing, bending and stretching. They could sustain injuries from falling from a ladder, sustaining cuts from tools etc. The work can be dusty and irritate the skin. One can learn this at a technical school or through some informal training.

Electrician

He is a tradesperson specializing in electrical wiring of buildings, machines and other related equipment. They may also be employed to install electrical equipment. Due to its nature of work in relation to safety, many jurisdictions require Electricians to be properly trained, tested and licensed. The University of Malawi and TEVETA institutions offer this training and testing. They work in climbing ladders, drilling walls etc.

Elevator Installer and Repair

They install, fix and maintain elevators, escalators and moving walkways and other lifters. They carry heavy equipment and parts. Not usually full time employees but may be required to work overtime even 24 hours. The work is usually learned through apprenticeship.

Glaziers

He is a construction tradesperson who selects, cuts, installs, replaces and removes residential, commercial and artistic glass.

Insulation Worker

Apply insulating materials to pipes, ductwork, or other mechanical systems in order to help control and maintain temperature. Mathematics, building and construction, mechanical, customer and personal service, is some of the knowledge that is needed. Coordination, active thinking, extent flexibility, finger dexterity are some of the required skills in this career. At least post-secondary school qualification is needed.

Painters and Paperhangers

They paint and hang papers on walls of building on any other places. An eye for colour, good hand-eye coordination, and neatness are required skills. They make a lot of decisions in choosing and applying the right paints and paper, vinyl and fabric for the job. Both formal and informal school can help to qualify for the job. Mathematical skills are also needed.

Pipelayers and Fitters

They bring together piping systems that deliver fluids and gases from one end to the other. This involves assembling, installing, and maintaining pipes that carry water, steam, chemicals, or fuel.

Plasterer

He is a tradesman who works with plaster, such as forming a layer of plaster on an interior wall or plaster decorative mouldings on ceilings or walls. Building and construction knowledge and skills are needed.

Plumber

He is a tradesman who specializes in installing and maintaining systems used for portable drinking water, sewage and drainage in plumbing systems. Technical training is required coupled with mathematical skills.

Roofers

They repair and install the roofs of buildings using a variety of materials. The work can be hot and very demanding for it involves heavy lifting, climbing and bending. Although some can learn the job through formal training, others learn it through apprenticeship.

Segmental Pavers

Lay out, cut and place segmental pavers unit. It includes installers of bedding and restraining materials for the paving units. They create durable and attractive surfaces for driveways, walkways, and patios.

Sheet Metal Workers

They fabricate, assemble, install, and repair metal products and equipment such as ducts, control boxes, drainpipes, furnaces etc. Mechanical, mathematical, administration knowledge is required. Critical thinking, decision making, arm-hand steadiness, visualization are among the many required skills and abilities. Formal education is needed above secondary school.

Stonemason

Is a masonry of shaping rocks into geometrical shapes and arranging them to form structures. Architectural knowledge and skills are needed. This ancient craft requires precision, artistic ability, and understanding of stone properties.

Terrazzo Workers

They decorate buildings or structures with terrazzo. The work involves bending, kneeling and reaching. Many learn the work through apprenticeship. Terrazzo is a composite material poured in place or precast, which is used for floor and wall treatments.

CREATIVE JOB LIST FOR DIFFERENT CAREERS

Actor/Actress

This is a person (Actress for female) portraying a character in a dramatic or comic production; he or she performs in film, television, theatre or radio. Insane dedication, polished-people skills, awesome auditioning skills, acting talent and a strong yet open personality are some of the required skills. Formal education is offered and required but below these skills. Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi train actors in Malawi.

Announcers

He is a presenter who makes announcements on television, radio and can conduct interviews in such forum. They can also be master of Ceremonies during events. Education for announcers varies. Bachelor's degree in Journalism, broadcasting, communication, along with internship or some experience is needed. Of course, a diploma in the said courses with good experience may do. Good communication and interpersonal skills with courageous and open personality are necessary.

Artists

Is a person engaged in one or more of any broad spectrum of activities related to creating arts, and/or demonstrating art. Creativity, Enthusiasm, flexibility, high self-esteem, perseverance, good physical stamina, self-discipline, presentation skills are some of the required skills.

Camera Operators

They use television, video or motion picture cameras to shoot a wide range of materials. It requires technical expertise and creativity. They may work long hours at times.

Choreographers

He or she is a person who creates dance compositions and plans and arranges dance movements and patterns for dances and especially for ballets. Leadership, creativity, discipline are some of the required skills in this career.

Craftspeople

This is a person skilled in a particular craft. They are motivated by mastery rather than attaining status, they are creative, persevere and lovers of tradition and history.

Dancers

A dancer ought to have the following skills among others, talent, good rhythmic and timing; enthusiastic, hard work, focus and determination, fitness and stamina, good relationship with others are needed. Professional dancers start training at a young age in schools.

Designers

He is an agent that specifies the structural properties of design object. Anyone who creates tangible or intangible objects is a designer by practice and there are many types of designers depending on what they design. Problem solving skills, persistence, humility, awareness, adaptability, passion, organization, curiosity, perspective and creativity are some of the required skills. Formal school plus apprenticeship are necessary.

Musician

He is a person who plays musical instrument or is musically talented or one who composes, conducts or performs music. Qualities of good artists apply here. Confidence, adventurous, hardworking, patience and persistence are some of their qualities. Formal education is not always necessary. Skill and talent matters most.

Photographers

He is a person who takes photographs. Use their technical expertise, creativity and composition skills to produce and preserve images that visually tell a story or record an event. Working conditions for them depends on area of speciality. Although formal education is not required for others, it is good to have it for it increases level of creativity as well as good understanding of photography.

Producers

In Malawi, a law degree is a minimum requirement for Judges plus ten years' experience. A legal training would allow someone to become a lay-magistrate while a law degree is a minimum entry requirement for Resident magistrates. A Lawyer is a person who practices law as a barrister, judge, attorney, counsellor or solicitor. The role of lawyers varies across legal jurisdictions. Good analytical skills, creativity, research skills, interpersonal skills, logical thinking, perseverance, public speaking skills, reading comprehension skills and writing skills are some of the desired skills for this profession. In Malawi, Chancellor College under the University of Malawi plus other institutions train lawyers. To study law at Chancellor College, an undergraduate student need to have studied any course for one year at any college of the University of Malawi and got a good credit at the end of their study. Postgraduates are also admitted. However, both undergo interviews before selection into the law school. The study period for law is four years excluding the initial first year mentioned which if added makes it five years. It's even required that those who studied somewhere else apart from Chancellor College should write bar examinations before being admitted to practice in the Country. However, one year experience whilst under supervision by a legal personnel, allow a Chancellor College graduate to get unconditional admission to the bar.
