Career Guidance & Counselling in Schools Program
Brief Concept for Career Guidance & Counselling in Schools
Basically, this program follows the following steps:
Step 1: Career Exploration Process
Visiting schools to talk about Career Exploration Process. This is a stage where a student is enlightened on how to gather information about him or herself and careers that exist in the world of work. Students engage in self-assessment, career research and experiences that enhance their skills and build upon their strength.
In short, Career Exploration stage involves three stages namely:
- Stage 1: Understanding oneself and self-assessment
- Stage 2: Gathering information about careers
- Stage 3: Integration of the information gathered in above 2 steps and the world of work
During this visit and after the talk, students are given Student Career Aspiration Forms where they basically indicate what they want or aspire to become in future. This they do having understood and reflected deeply on the Career exploration process.
Step 2: Collection & Review of Aspiration Forms
Visiting schools to collect the Student Career Aspiration Forms for review and appreciation. Here officers try to appreciate the types and nature of careers aspired by students at such a school. This helps OCG to focus on what careers to be discussed further in the following meetings. Further, OCG is then guided on which role models to bring to such a school for motivation.
Step 3: Specific Career Discussions
Visiting schools to talk about the specific careers chosen by students through the Career Aspiration Forms. During this session students deeply understand those careers and privately engage with OCG officers for further and detailed appreciation of their choices. Here, one to one session between students and OCG officer also takes place.
Step 4: Role Model Engagements
Bringing Role Models to students. Here role models of the student chosen careers are brought to inspire students. It is here where students have a practical and live engagement with a model of their career where questions and interactions between them is also done. During this session, OCG officers passively participate.
Step 5: Follow-up & Action Plans
Lastly, schools are visited to follow up on Career action plans by students based on the above activities. Activities such as career debate and quiz are used.
Note: For the sake of proper coordination between schools and OCG, each school assigns 2 Teachers (male and female) to act as Teacher Career Representatives for the school.
